Facing History’s Approach to Fostering Civil Discourse for Educators

Facing History’s Approach to Fostering Civil Discourse for Educators
This in-person workshop features resources, strategies, and tools to foster civil discourse and navigate challenging topics, such as antisemitism. Engaging in civil discourse means bringing your mind, heart, and conscience to reflective conversations on topics that matter, in ways that allow you to extend your understanding while in dialogue with others. Utilizing the Fostering Civil Discourse Guide, participants will learn about Facing History’s pedagogical approach, practice teaching strategies for creating a "brave and safe space" for critical and courageous conversations, and explore the importance of identity and its connection to discussing complex and challenging topics. Sessions will include modeling how to apply these strategies and resources to address the growth of antisemitism in our schools. Participants will: - Learn about strategies and materials designed to foster civil discourse and navigate challenging conversations in the classroom - Explore resources that prepare educators to teach about current events - Have an opportunity to discuss and practice strategies with other educators in addressing complex and challenging topics. Tikvat Israel RainScape Beginnings

Tikvat Israel RainScape Beginnings
Join us as we prepare the grounds for our RainScape! A RainScape is a landscape design technique that helps reduce stormwater runoff. Since we are located next to Rock Creek we want to prevent stormwater and pollution from flowing into storm drains and the nearby stream. In the fall, we will be bringing our vision to life by planting various native plant species that will help trap the water runoff from the roof and let it soak into the ground instead of flowing into the parking lot and down the hill into the creek. But in order to be successful in the fall, we need to prepare the ground now in the spring! We will be spreading a thin layer of compost and then a thicker layer of woodchips on top. By the time we're ready to plant this fall, the ground will be well prepared, and our chances of success will be that much greater. Come out this Sunday (4/12) for some gardening and good cheer :) Garden rakes and equipment will be provided, but bring your own if you feel inclined. This event will start at 9am and go until 1pm. Look for us in the front parking lot next to the playground!

Fighting Food Insecurity

Fighting Food Insecurity
Congregation Or Chadash (COC) has three activities for fighting food insecurity in Maryland. 1. We have received $1,000 microgrant from The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to purchase food for Afghani refugees. COC partners with and interfaith refugee group New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA). Afghani refugees often come with little resources. This microgrant will provide funding to buy halal meat, milk, fruit, and rice for the neediest families in our community. 2. COC will be providing a dinner for Stepping Stones Shelter. Stepping Stones is a family shelter that provides emergency shelter for up to six families at one time. 2. We are also currently holding a canned food drive that will end on April 12th. The food we collect will go to Manna Food Center whose mission is to fight hunger in Montgomery County, Maryland. Fighting Food Insecurity is presented by Congregation Or Chadash in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the generous support of The Sara and Samuel J. Lessans Good Deeds Day Fund.
