With federal furloughs continuing and SNAP benefits tightening, many local families, Holocaust survivors, and older adults living on fixed incomes are facing unexpected financial strain.

Together with our partners—Yad Yehuda, Hebrew Free Loan, and JSSA—we’re responding with food assistance, interest-free loans, and emergency support.

  • Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA): Therapy and grief support from clinicians attuned to Jewish needs. Learn more
  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): Many federal agencies offer EAPs that provide confidential counseling and support services to help employees manage personal and work-related challenges.
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers support and resources for individuals dealing with stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns during employment transitions. Learn more

  • Bikur Cholim offers support to Jewish patients and caregivers.
  • Hebrew Free Loan Unemployment and Furlough Loans: Interest-free loans of up to $18,000 (disbursed over 6 months) for those facing unemployment or furlough. Repayment begins after employment is secured or after 9 months (whichever comes sooner) or as soon as back pay is received from the furlough.
  • JCADA supports victims of intimate partner violence to become empowered and live safely.
  • JSSA’s Homecare program supports older adults with daily living and medication management so their loved ones can work with peace of mind. Interested in supporting an older adult living at home? Call 240-800-JSSA (5772).
  • JSSA’s Meals on Wheels program provides daily nutritious, kosher meals delivered to older adults in Montgomery County, MD. Call 301-816-2612 to learn more.

  • Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School of the Nation’s Capital is matching families affected by federal job transitions (including those who need to return to the office in-person) with families that can help with before/after care, transportation, meals, and other needs.   • Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network connects laid off Federal workers to free legal support through a network of pro bono attorneys.

Federal Employees Legal Defense Network

The Federal Employees Legal Defense Network is uniting lawyers to assist current or former federal workers through a central hub to connect them with opportunities to provide much needed representation. If you have experience representing federal employees or have already participated in a training, signup for the preliminary interest list here: We The Action’s Public Service Legal Response Center.

Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network

The Legal Defense Network urgently supports federal workers facing termination or adverse actions, recruiting volunteer lawyers to provide counsel amid overwhelming demand. This offers law firm associates a valuable pro bono opportunity with extensive training, support, and malpractice coverage, qualifying under APBCo standards.

When federal layoffs and funding changes in early 2025 created sudden financial strain for many in our community, Federation responded quickly with direct support and long-term strategies. Our Individuals and Families in Need (IFN) approach provides immediate relief while collecting critical data to strengthen future anti-poverty initiatives. Together, we are making sure no one in Jewish Greater Washington faces crisis alone.
How We Responded
  • Emergency Relief: Partnering with community rabbis to deliver emergency cash assistance for rent, utilities, food, and medical needs.
  • Data Collection: Monitoring enrollment and financial aid requests across schools and camps to understand the ripple effects of the crisis.
  • Resource Hub: Launching a one-stop online page to connect families with available programs and services.
