God promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that their descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. After the Exodus from Egypt and forty years of wandering in the desert, the Israelites, under Joshua’s leadership, conquered the Promised Land and settled there.

However, the biblical text raises difficult geographical and ethical questions.
