The Leo Bernstein Jewish Academy of Fine Arts is a Jewish Day School in Silver Spring with a specialized Art, Music and Science program. For the school year 2014-2015 the school will cover grades K-3, and will be adding grades yearly.
The Hebrew curriculum is taught as Hebrew immersion, Ivrit B’ Ivrit.

The Jewish Academy of Fine Arts feels that personal expression through music and art is an essential part of every child’s education. In fine arts students will study the life and work of a variety of artists, and will have the opportunity to create their own artwork inspired by the style and techniques of those artists. Field trips will allow students to view works by the studied artists in the many outstanding art museums and galleries in the Washington, D.C area.

The music program will include music appreciation and performance. Students will learn to identify the instruments of the orchestra and to appreciate how their sounds come together to create music. Each student will also learn to read musical notation (beginning with the use of a wide variety of rhythm instruments ) and eventually learn to play a musical instrument. These experiences enhance hand-eye coordination, teach listening skills and allow children to experience creating beautiful sounds with their own hands and hearts. Traditional Jewish holiday songs will be integrated into the repertoire. Students will attend the fabulous “Kinderkonzerts” presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. At the close of the school year, the students will share their accomplishments at a vernissage of student artwork and a musical ensemble performance.
