Seeing Color in Classical Art
Jennifer Stager – Johns Hopkins University
Ancient Mediterranean art and architecture that have survived over the centuries present the modern viewer with images of white. Recent research and scholarship have overturned this visual aspect.
There is now a consensus that sculpture and similar artifacts produced in the ancient Mediterranean world, were, in fact, multi-colored. Dr. Stager will examine the traces of color in a variety of media and recreate what the ancients would have witnessed.
