Join the global movement to Do Good—From Home!

On Sunday, March 29, people around the world joined together for a different type of global Good Deeds Day. From community cleanups to food deliveries, and from phone calls to senior citizens to virtual meditation, people around the world acted as a force for good to help each other in this extraordinary time of need. At the same time, 70 representatives from different countries also gathered via Zoom to share how their communities had pivoted plans to do good based on the new reality of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Federation team was proud to take part in this special conversation.

Many of our international counterparts spoke of the increased needs among already vulnerable populations, and how they were focused on finding innovative ways to connect. Volunteers in South America came up with new ways to thank sanitation workers—the essential people who work to keep the community clean all year round— by writing notes they attached to their trash cans. The representative from Rwanda shared about the difficulties of not only getting soap to his constituents, but of teaching people how to properly use the soap. Several others described projects designed to support their community’s mental health in addition to physical health, through education classes and virtual mindfulness training. We were inspired and grateful to learn with and from so many like-minded communities.

Although our local Good Deeds Day was planned for April 26, our new reality means that in Greater Washington, you can join people from around the world in doing acts of kindness and service right now. Federation is working with our 92 Good Deeds Day partner and supporter organizations to identify our community’s immediate needs and mobilize volunteers for virtual volunteer opportunities. With the world changing every day, this is the time to connect with purpose and continue to be a force for good in the community.
