In Remembrance, We Find Resolve

As we conclude Passover and approach Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), we are reminded of the profound significance of both holidays. Passover calls us to reflect on freedom—the freedom our ancestors fought for and the ongoing struggle for freedom we and many others face today.

In the coming days, as we observe Yom HaShoah, we pause to honor the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust and reflect on the incredible resilience and accomplishments of those who survived. Their courage and strength in rebuilding their lives after such unimaginable horrors remind us of the enduring power of hope and belief in a better future, and the inherent worth of every individual. Just as each survivor helped shape a new world for future generations, each life lost in the Holocaust took with it a potential that can never be replaced—a loss that echoes through time. This profound absence reminds us that justice is not just a historical pursuit but a continuous responsibility. Today, we must fight to protect the dignity and freedom of every individual, ensuring that the world we build is one that honors the lives and futures lost.

This commitment to justice for each and every person resonates even more urgently today. We must fight for the return of the remaining 59 hostages taken on October 7th and still held by Hamas. We must simultaneously support the struggles of individuals unjustly caught in systems that strip away their rights, humanity, and their freedom. Our collective fight for freedom is far from over, and it is our duty to remain vigilant in upholding the dignity and value of every human life.

As we gather during this season of reflection and renewal, let us embrace our shared responsibility to support and protect one another. The strength of our community lies in our ability to act together, to give voice to those who cannot advocate for themselves, and to ensure that every person is treated with the dignity they deserve.

Ongoing Support for Those Affected by Federal Layoffs

In partnership with JCRC of Greater Washington, we’re hosting a webinar next week to provide essential legal guidance for federal employees navigating this challenging time. JCRC CEO Ron Halber will moderate a conversation with Robert Shriver, Associate Director of Employee Services at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and Michelle Bercovici, Partner at Alden Law Group. Together, they’ll offer practical insights into navigating layoffs, agency changes, and budget cuts. Together, we’re ensuring our community has the clarity, resources, and support to move forward.

Tackling Disinformation

Earlier this month, our Foundation’s Fund for Women and Girls joined Jewish Women International (JWI) for a pivotal event in Washington, DC. The discussion, attended by diplomats, congressional staff, and community leaders, unveiled a powerful report on how digital platforms are being weaponized to discredit survivors of gender-based violence on October 7th and manipulate public perception. Through the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Washington, we leverage the power of philanthropy and collective action to support initiatives like this—empowering us to address these challenges and amplify the voices of those who need it most. Your Vote, Your Voice: A Mitzvah in Action

Voting isn’t just a right—it’s a mitzvah. It’s our way of taking action to create the change we want to see in the world. As Jews, we’re called to shape our future, fight for justice, and ensure our voices are heard. The World Zionist Congress elections, now through May 4, are one powerful way to do just that. On Tuesday, April 22, join us online to hear from a range of slates, each bringing diverse perspectives to the table. Let’s show up for our community, our values, and our future. Register now
