Join The Jewish Federation and our Greater Washington Jewish community to DO GOOD together April 3 – 10!

Food insecurity across our community remains a critical issue but, together, we can help individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. This Good Deeds Week, Federation is proud to bring together 60+ community partners and thousands of community members across DC, MD, and Northern VA to combat food insecurity in our region.

Together, we will fill the shelves of local food pantries, feed those who are hungry, and make a difference all week long.

Good Deeds Week 2022 Volunteer Projects

All in-person volunteer opportunities will follow CDC guidelines for COVID-19 safety.

Donations can be dropped off at Beth El.
Both/Hybrid VA Family friendly Drop off men’s and women’s professional clothing for the clothes closet at PathForward Virginia, who aim to empower people from streets to stability with a continuum of care. This includes a clothing room where clients can “shop” for free. All clothing donations should new or gently used, free of rips, stains, or excessive wear. PathForward has also mentioned that it is always in need of white socks and underwear!
7 George Washington University Hillel GW Grow Garden Private Sunday, April 3 In Person DC GW Hillel is working with the GW Grow Garden to clean up the community wide garden.
8 Congregation Or Chadash Food Drive for Manna Public April 1-10 Both/Hybrid MD We will be collecting a variety of non perishable food items specified on the Manna Food website to be delivered to Manna at the end of Good Deeds Week
9 Kesher Israel Congregation Food Drive for Capital Kosher Pantry Public April 3-10 In Person DC Kesher Israel will be partnering with Capital Kosher Pantry and Yad Yehuda of Greater Washington to provide necessary items for Pesach and all year for families in need. A collection box will be available at Kesher Israel as you shop for Pesach and clean out your chametz.
10 Congregation Olam Tikvah Fresh Produce Drive Public April 3, 9:30-11:00 am In Person VA Fresh produce will be collected by volunteers in the Congregation Olam Tikvah parking lot. The donated produce will be delivered to Food for Others, a local food bank.
11 Congregation Olam Tikvah Chametz Food Drive Public Ongoing through April 13th Both/Hybrid VA In coordination with Passover, Congregation Olam Tikvah will be collecting chametz foods to be donated to Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO), an all-volunteer charity that gives food and financial help to people with short-term emergencies and provides clothes and household items to people with low incomes.

15 Sha'are Tefila Congregation Good Deeds Week Collections Public April 3-10 Both/Hybrid We are partnering with JCADA and Temple Emanuel ECC. JCADA clients will be the recipients of grocery gift cards. Temple Emanuel is collecting a list of items for DC Diaper Bank.
16 Kol Ami, Northern VA Reconstructionist Community Colors of Gratitude Public April 3, 4:00-5:30 pm Virtual Kol Ami partners once again to bring acclaimed illustrator and spiritualist Joanne Fink (joannefinkjudaica.com) to lead a gratitude workshop. We will handcraft gratitude cards and learn daily practices that grow our gratitude for the blessings in life
17 Yad Yehuda, Capital Kosher Food Pantry Passover Food Drive Public Ongoing Both/Hybrid MD Please help the Capital Kosher Pantry collect Kosher for Passover foods to distribute to local families for Pesach. 18 University of Maryland Hillel Rise Against Hunger Food Packaging Private April 6, 2:30-6:00pm In Person MD Rise Against Hunger will bringing a food packaging event to Maryland Hillel where 30-60 volunteers will have the opportunity to package 10,152 meals in about 2 hours. There is an education portion at the beginning of the event lead by a Rise Against Hunger facilitator and the food will be sent to one of their partners in 30+ countries. We will be partnering with Capital Camps as well.
19 Capital Camps Rise Against Hunger with Maryland Hillel Private April 6, 2:30-6:00PM In Person MD Rise Against Hunger will bringing a food packaging event to Maryland Hillel where 30-60 volunteers will have the opportunity to package 10,152 meals in about 2 hours. 20 Congregation Har Shalom KindSoup for the Soul Public April 10, 4:00pm Both/Hybrid MD Come together, on Zoom from your own kitchen, for some fun and to create a community of healthy meal donors. We'll be cooking enough to feed our own families PLUS to pack up containers to freeze and deliver to those in need. Recipe will be shared the Monday prior to cooking.
21 Congregation Har Shalom Passover Basket delivery for B'nai Brith/JSSA Project HOPE Private April 10, 10:00 am-1:00 pm In Person MD Join the Har Shalom community for the B'nai Brith / JSSA Project HOPE Passover Project. This is a great way for volunteers of all ages to participate in a service project benefiting those in our community and help families celebrate Passover!
22 Edlavitch DC JCC Good Deeds Week at EDCJCC Public April 3, 10:00-11:30 am In Person DC 4+ Spend your morning doing projects to support individuals experiencing food insecurity. We will make soup kits for the clients of So Others Might Eat, advocate for better food access, and learn about the importance of supporting our food insecure neighbors.
23 Edlavitch DCJCC Good Deeds Week at Home Public April 3, 10:30am-12:00pm Both/Hybrid DC Prepare trail mix at home to support the clients of So Others Might Eat. You’ll be responsible for shopping for the ingredients, making the trail mix, and delivering it to the JCC. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the importance of supporting our food insecure neighbors and advocate for food access with Mazon!

Housing Up builds thriving communities in Washington, DC by developing affordable housing and offering comprehensive support services to homeless and low-income families.The donations will go to Partner Arms 2, where the JCC volunteers on a monthly basis.

27 BBYO NoVA Council J-Serve with BBYO Private April 3 In Person VA NoVA Council BBYO is collecting canned goods and building Power Packs for Food For Others, while learning about what the organization does to help combat food insecurity in Northern Virginia.
28 Bender JCC Delivering Good Public April 5, 4:00-5:30 pm In Person MD 12+ The Bender JCC is pleased to partner with MANNA, and Montgomery County School System to help fill the weekend meal gap for students. Volunteers will help organize and pack bags with shelf-stable items that will be handed out by a local elementary school. This is a fabulous opportunity for families, teens needing SSL hours, and anyone looking for ongoing Tikkun Olam (Healing the World).
29 Washington Hebrew, Bender JCC, Beth El KindSoup for Afghan Refugees Public April 3, 10:30-11:30 am Both/Hybrid MD 18+ Join KindWorks to cook KindSoups for newly arriving Afghan refugee families. Chef Dominique Rychlik will lead us in cooking together and then we’ll deliver meals to families having recently been relocated to our area from Afghanistan, so that they too can enjoy a filling and nutritious meal!

31 Washington Hebrew Congregation Sort Clothing at Interfaith Works Public April 3, 1:00-3:00 pm In Person MD 12+ Interfaith Works Clothing Center (IWCC) has been helping Montgomery County low-income families by providing them with clothing and home goods at no charge. This enables them to focus their resources on food, rent, utilities, medicine, school supplies and other basic needs. Through this program, we provide the link between neighbors who have things they no longer need with neighbors who use these items to provide for their basic needs.
34 Washington Hebrew Congregation Undies for Everyone Public April 3, 10:30am-12:30pm In Person DC 8+ Undies for Everyone provides children living in poverty or crisis with new underwear, recognizing the importance of this small basic need as part of a child’s increased chances of long-term success. Undies for Everyone champion Brené Brown said it best: “Underwear is something you take for granted until you don’t have it.” In teams, we will roll 7 pairs of undies in bags that will be given to children in Ward 8.

41 Bender JCC Little Noshers Private April 3, 4:00-5:00 pm In Person MD We’ll learn fun facts, create crafts, and enjoy PJ Library storytime all about Passover. Working together, we can help restock the shelves at our local food pantries. *While this is a special Jam the Trolley event, you can also drop off your donations at the J during business hours throughout the year.
43 Ramah Day Camp Greater DC Day of Service at Camp Public April 10, 1:00-2:30 pm In Person MD Join Ramah to work with our camp partners, the Day Spring Church, to do some cleanup and weeding at our camp site, Wellspring Conference Center, in honor of this summer's theme Ahavat Adamah - Love of the Earth. 49 Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse JCADA Grocery Gift Card Drive Public April 3-10 Both/Hybrid Virtual, MD JCADA is raising grocery store gift card donations to be given to our clients who are survivors of intimate partner violence. Food insecurity is one of the most common struggle for survivors of intimate partner violence, and grocery gift cards can truly impact someone's life. Gift cards can be mailed to JCADA at PO Box 226 Rockville, MD 20847, or a JCADA staff member can pick up gift card donations from your organization or synagogue. We will be doing multiple projects to support So What Else and their daily food distribution for families in Montgomery County. 67 Congregation Etz Hayim Lasagna Love Public Through April 10 Both/Hybrid VA Participants will pick up a disposable pan, gloves, recipe, and hygiene guidelines at Congregation Etz Hayim starting Friday, March 25, 2022. After preparing the lasagnas at home, participants will bring them back to CEH where we will store them in the freezer. The lasagnas will be donated to PathForward in Arlington to service in their food kitchen to homeless Arlington residents.
68 Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School of the Nation's Capital Milton's Adopt-a-Block Private April 3-10 In Person DC MILTON has adopted the blocks around both campuses as part of the DC mayor’s Adopt-a-Block program! In adopting these blocks, we’ve agreed to collect trash and recycling throughout the year, ensuring we are good neighbors while also living our Jewish values of being Stewards of the Earth!

71 Agudas Achim Preschool and Young Families After-School Snack Packs Private April 10, 11:00am-12:00pm In Person VA We'll be collecting individually wrapped, non-perishable, kid-friendly, healthy snacks in the days leading up to our event. We'll be putting together "after-school snack packs" for our neighbors at Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria

Smith Jewish Day School Drive Up and Drop Off Mitzvah Day Private April 10, 10:00am-12:00pm In Person MD As you get your home ready for Pesach, clean your kids' rooms, garage, and winter closets and pack up the items to be donated to a new loving home. Join the CESJDS community at a Donation Drop-Off Day -- Drive up and drop off your gently used items. Volunteers will be onsite to help unload your cars.
73 Jewish Social Services Agency (JSSA) Decorate Cards for Passover Baskets Public April 3-8 In Person MD JSSA is accepting decorated cards for Passover baskets from April 3-8, 2022. The completed decorated cards must be dropped off at 6123 Montrose Rd, Rockville, MD 20852 between 9-5 from April 3 to April 8. The cards will be put in the Passover baskets, and the Passover Baskets will be delivered on Sunday, April 10th, to those who need help to celebrate the holiday. Cards must not be decorated with glitter.

75 Kehilat Pardes Aspen Hill 5K Public April 3, 9:00-10:15am In Person MD Annual Aspen Hill 5K in Aspen Hill Regional Park (5013 Baltic Ave), running along the Rock Creek Trail. There will also be a craft station to make cards and paper flowers to be included in food baskets that we will be delivering the following Sunday in partnership with B'nai Brith's Project Hope for Passover.

80 Tifereth Israel Congregation Project Hope Public April 10 In Person DC Bnai Brith organizes yearly a project that deliveries Passover foods to elderly and needy people in our area. Bnai Brith purchases the food and has it packed for delivery. Needy individuals are identified by JSSA. Prepared Passover packages will be delivered on April 10 by congregations such as Tifereth Israel
81 BBYO - DC Council BBG Spirit Day x J-Serve Public April 3 In Person DC We are partnering with Children’s Miracle Network to make coloring kits and cards for patients at Children’s National Hospital, Kits to Heart to make friendship bracelets for cancer patients, The Montgomery County Humane Society to make dog toys, and St. Andrew Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis Center to send supplies to Ukraine
82 Ohr Kodesh Congregation Rock Creek Park Cleanup Public April 3, 2:00-4:00pm In Person MD Families of all ages are welcome to join us to participate in the Rock Creek Park Conservancy's Extreme Cleanup to protect Rock Creek Park as a valuable oasis for people who visit and the animals who make it their home. And by preventing garbage from washing into the creek, we are helping to protect the entire Rock Creek watershed and restore the Chesapeake Bay. This is a meaningful way to honor Earth Month!
83 Bethesda Jewish Congregation Food for Manna Public April 1-8 In Person MD We will be collecting non-perishable food items to restock the pantry of Manna Food Center
84 Sixth & I Toiletry Drive Public April 4-8 In Person DC Sixth & I is collecting toiletries to benefit Central Union Mission and the facilities they operate across Washington, DC for those at-risk of and experiencing homelessness. We will be accepting unused toiletries of any size during regular business hours and at all in-person events
85 OneTable Shabbat Sha-Sandwich Making Public April 8, 7 pm In Person DC 20s-30s Welcome in Shabbat by prepping PB&J sandwiches for Martha’s Table’s mobile food program and leaning into Passover’s DIY nature to explore local food justice issues.

Good Deeds Day celebrates the value and importance of giving back to the community we live in.
