SUMMARY:Princess\, Priestess & Poet Enheduana: History’s First Named Author
DESCRIPTION:Princess\, Priestess & Poet Enheduana: History’s First Named Author\nAlhena Gadotti – Towson University \nEnheduana was the daughter of Sargon The Great of Akkad (23rd century BCE)\, and is one of the most intriguing\, yet elusive\, women from antiquity. She has been celebrated as the earliest known named author in world history. \nRoyal princess\, priestess\, and putative poet\, Enheduana deserves as much attention as her martial relatives. A crucial contributor to her father’s military ambitions\, Enheduana nonetheless wielded religious and economic power\, as evidenced by primary and secondary sources. \nEven more interestingly\, Enheduana remained alive in the cultural memory of those who came after her\, so much so that writings attributed to her were integrated into the scribal curriculum centuries after her death. \nThis presentation will situate Enheduana in the tumultuous times in which she lived to gain a better understanding of her roles as princess\, priestess of the Sumerian moon cult\, and illustrious poet.

SUMMARY:Turning Towards: A Shavuot Learning Celebration
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate Shavuot—the festival commemorating the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai—join us for a special Shavuot learning exploring what it means to turn towards Judaism in your own way. At Sinai\, our ancestors made a collective choice to receive Torah and enter into covenant. Tonight\, we’ll reflect on moments of curiosity and connection: the questions that draw us closer\, the practices we’re curious about\, and the ways we find meaning in Jewish life. \nWe’ll dive into learning and conversation that honors all paths—whether you’re exploring for the first time\, returning after time away\, or deepening a lifelong connection. \nIn the spirit of Shavuot\, we’ll share mac n’ cheese\, good conversation\, and the warmth of community. Feel free to bring your favorite dessert\, though it’s not required. Please share any allergy or dietary restrictions when you sign up so we can create a feast that everyone can enjoy. \nNo experience necessary. Everyone is welcome. This gathering will take place in Silver Spring\, MD. Specific meet-up location and additional details will be shared with registrants after the registration deadline. Register by May 15th. \nthe Den Collective serves 20s\, 30s\, and 40s throughout the Greater Washington Area.

SUMMARY:The Twelve Tribes of Israel
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 31\, 2026 at 7:30 pm at B’nai Israel Congregation\nThe Twelve Tribes of Israel\nAndrew Tobolowsky – William & Mary \nThe twelve tribes of Israel are the indisputable centerpiece of the Hebrew Bible’s visions of Israelite identity\, and the main protagonist of the biblical visions of history. They are\, also\, the main way the Hebrew Bible accounts for the unity of the historically and politically distinct kingdoms of Israel and Judah from the very beginning\, right through the bitter end of their conquest and destruction. \nBut what do we really know about the actual history of Israel’s tribes? What do we know about the historical development of the biblical vision of the twelve\, in its various forms? This talk offers a new look at the evidence\, with some startling new conclusions.

SUMMARY:150th Anniversary of the Historic Synagogue
DESCRIPTION:2026 marks both the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 150th anniversary of Adas Israel Congregation’s historic synagogue. The convergence of these anniversaries is no coincidence. The synagogue’s founders timed its dedication to the nation’s centennial\, affirming Jewish belonging and patriotism in the American story. To commemorate this important milestone\, the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum will hold a celebration on June 9\, the 150th anniversary of the building’s dedication.
