SUMMARY:From the Inferno of the Safe Rooms and the Gaza Tunnels of to a Path of Healing and Recovery
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to hear the personal tantalizing testimonies of two Kibbutz Nir Oz members – Nili Margalit and Eyal Barad. \nNili\, a nurse\, was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and held captive in Gaza for 55 days. Her father was murdered during the attack. While in captivity\, Nili used her medical training to help care for other hostages who were injured or ill. \nEyal survived the attack together with his wife and their three young children\, sheltering for hours in their safe room as the attack unfolded throughout the kibbutz. One of their children is on the autism spectrum\, making the need to remain completely silent for hours especially difficult. During that time\, security cameras outside their home recorded what was happening around them. \nNili and Eyal will share their experiences of October 7\, captivity\, survival\, and the lasting impact of the attack on their families and the community of Kibbutz Nir Oz.

SUMMARY:Israeli Movie Night: A Letter to David
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Tom Shoval crafts a personal cinematic letter to David Cunio\, who was abducted from Nir Oz to Gaza on October 7th and was released after 738 days in captivity. Ten years ago\, David and his twin brother Eitan starred in Shoval’s award-winning debut feature film Youth (Berlinale 2013)\, which focused on the powerful bond between brothers and\, in a tragic and unimaginable twist of fate\, revolved around a kidnapping. Through unedited behind-the-scenes footage and audition tapes from Youth\, Shoval builds a multi-layered documentary that explores the inexplicable connections between life and cinema\, memory and reality\, and the catastrophic consequences of war. When first presented at the 2025 Berlinale as a “film without an ending\,” Shoval pledged not to consider the work finished until David was home. This updated film\, A Letter to David—The Complete Version\, screened during the 2026 Berlinale\, concludes with a moving new epilogue featuring David\, Ariel\, and the entire Cunio family in the ending we all dared to hope for.

SUMMARY:Stolen Moments: Jewish Themes and Cultural Allyship in African American Art
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum \nPresented by Dr. LaNitra M. Berger\nAssociate Professor of History and Art History; Director of African and African American Studies\, George Mason University \nJoin us for an engaging conversation uncovering the powerful and often overlooked connections between Black and Jewish identity through the work of African American artists. Dr. LaNitra Berger will discuss the first book-length study of cultural allyship that focuses on Jewish themes in Black art. Until recently\, most research has examined how Jewish artists incorporate Black or racial themes into their work—not the other way around. \nHer book\, Stolen Moments: Jewish Themes and Cultural Allyship in African American Art\, argues that Black American artists’ contributions to the Black-Jewish relationship are robust; however\, they have often been misinterpreted\, forgotten\, or suppressed. By incorporating Jewish themes into their work\, Black American artists connect Black and Jewish identity in diverse and complex ways. Because of their own experiences with racism and oppression\, Black artists have been uniquely positioned to engage with Jewish themes and enrich broader discussions of how racial identity is formed in America. \nStolen Moments centers the work of five influential Black American artists from the late 19th century to the present who have incorporated Jewish themes into their work\, and in doing so\, have found strong connections between Black and Jewish identity.
