SUMMARY:Model or Mirror? Lessons from the “Golden Age” of Sephardic History
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jonathan Ray\nSamuel Eig Professor of Jewish Studies\, Department of Theology and Religious Studies\, Georgetown University \nJoin us online for a close look at the rich and complex world of Sephardic Jewish life in medieval Spain. \nThe Jews of medieval Spain represent one of the most fabled societies in all of Jewish history. To this day\, the outstanding philosophers\, poets\, and courtiers of the age – names like Maimonides\, Judah Halevi\, and Isaac Abravanel – remain beloved examples of Jewish cultural achievement. At the same time\, the Spanish Inquisition and the summary Expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 still rank among the most devastating events in Jewish history. But celebrating the triumphs of this society\, and mourning its fate\, is not the same as understanding it. The reality of daily life for Sephardic Jews was often far different\, and perhaps far more familiar\, than these legends would have us believe. \nThis talk will explore the diverse composition of Jewish communities and the ways Jews navigated their relationships with their Muslim and Christian neighbors. Together\, we’ll take a fresh look at the era often called the “Golden Age” of Jewish civilization\, and consider what this history might teach us about Jewish community\, identity\, and life today.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Nili Margalit: Hero\, Nurse\, Survivor
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This program is presented by Har Shalom in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. \nDESCRIPTION:\nOn October 7\, 2023\, Nili Margalit was kidnapped from her home on Kibbutz Nir Oz and held captive in the tunnels of Gaza for 55 days. A pediatric nurse\, Nili became a lifeline to fellow hostages\, caring for their physical and emotional needs under unimaginable circumstances. \nJoin us for an evening with Nili as she shares her story of survival\, resilience\, and healing—and the bonds she formed with those who endured captivity alongside her. \nNili will be joined by her neighbor from Kibbutz Nir Oz\, Eyal Barad\, whose daughter Carmel is in urgent need of our support. \nCarmel is a young survivor of the October 7 attack on Nir Oz. She continues to live with significant trauma from that day\, and she has severe and costly health care needs. Her grandfather was murdered during the attack\, and her family continues to navigate the devastating aftermath. \nNili has made it her personal mission to help raise funds for Carmel and her family. \nPlease join us to hear Nili’s extraordinary story\, and\, in her honor\, help give Carmel the care and support she needs. \nMake a donation to support Carmel: https://www.jgive.com/new/en/usd/donation-targets/174927 \nThis program is presented by Har Shalom in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.

SUMMARY:From the Inferno of the Safe Rooms and the Gaza Tunnels of to a Path of Healing and Recovery
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to hear the personal tantalizing testimonies of two Kibbutz Nir Oz members – Nili Margalit and Eyal Barad. \nNili\, a nurse\, was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and held captive in Gaza for 55 days. Her father was murdered during the attack. While in captivity\, Nili used her medical training to help care for other hostages who were injured or ill. \nEyal survived the attack together with his wife and their three young children\, sheltering for hours in their safe room as the attack unfolded throughout the kibbutz. One of their children is on the autism spectrum\, making the need to remain completely silent for hours especially difficult. During that time\, security cameras outside their home recorded what was happening around them. \nNili and Eyal will share their experiences of October 7\, captivity\, survival\, and the lasting impact of the attack on their families and the community of Kibbutz Nir Oz.
