SUMMARY:Honest to Goodness: A Teshuvah Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Let’s be real: meaningful\, lasting change requires honest acknowledgment\, not self-punishment. With guest Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block\, explore the ancient practice of teshuva (return) as a framework for the kind of self-reckoning that actually sticks. \nDrawing on the Jewish ethical practice Mussar\, Chassidic wisdom\, and the surprising story of Yehuda\, you’ll be guided through reflection\, visioning\, and concrete intention-setting across four dimensions of our lives: our relationships\, our bodies\, our spiritual lives\, and our relationship to the planet.

SUMMARY:Evan Gershkovich with Peter Baker
DESCRIPTION:In March 2023\, a year after Russia invaded Ukraine\, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich met with a source in an empty restaurant 900 miles east of Moscow. Masked agents charged in\, blindfolded Gershkovich\, and dragged him into an unmarked van. The agents were from the FSB\, Putin’s security service\, and the successor to the Soviet-era KGB. Five years earlier\, Gershkovich—whose parents had left the Soviet Union in the 1970s for New Jersey—arrived in Moscow to start his journalism career. \nInterrogated for hours after his arrest\, Gershkovich was charged with spying and thrown in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo prison—a pawn in a geopolitical chess match. After his world shrunk to a tiny cell\, Gershkovich continued reporting. For the next sixteen months\, he documented a life in Russia that few Westerners will ever experience: its sprawling prison system\, with its own vocabulary and customs—and surprising pockets of humanity. \nIn This Cursed Beautiful Land: A Russian-American Story\, Gershkovich recounts the events leading to his arrest\, his nearly 500 days in Russian prisons\, and the multi-country prisoner swap that freed him. More than a prison memoir\, it’s a chronicle of a misunderstood people and their land. \nGershkovich will be in conversation with Peter Baker\, the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times.

SUMMARY:October 7th: Remembering Together Through Music\, Stories & Food
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a meaningful community gathering marking three years since October 7th — an evening of remembrance\, reflection\, and hope. \nThe evening will feature a moving musical experience\, where select members of our community have chosen songs that hold personal and collective memories connected to October 7. The songs will be brought to life by a group of Israeli musicians\, creating a space to honor the people\, places\, and stories that continue to stay with us. \nFollowing the performance\, we will gather around food prepared in memory of those who were lost and the communities that were impacted on that day. Through shared recipes and stories\, we will remember\, reflect\, and create space to process the journey of the three years that have passed. \nTogether\, we will hold both the pain and the hope — honoring those we lost while strengthening the connections\, resilience\, and community that continue to carry us forward. \nThis program is free. RSVP required. \nThis program is presented in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
