SUMMARY:Helping Our Children Thrive Through The Summer Months
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Jonnel Hector*\, Director of Guidance at Gesher Jewish Day School\, as we build on the insights shared by Tovah Klein\, author of Raising Resilience: How to Help Our Children THRIVE in Times of Uncertainty. This session is designed to be interactive\, supportive\, and grounded in real family experiences. Come with questions\, reflections\, or simply the desire to connect with other parents. \nWhat we’ll talk about: \n\nCreating predictable yet flexible summer routines\nSupporting emotional regulation during unstructured time\nEncouraging independence and confidence\nNavigating social dynamics\, camps\, and downtime\nStrengthening parent-child connection in everyday moments\n\nOpen to parents and caregivers of children who want to foster resilience\, confidence\, and joy throughout the summer. Best for children 0 – 8. Childcare provided. \n*Jonnel Hector earned a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland in 2004. Since then\, he has dedicated his career to working with adolescents and their families in both school and clinical settings. Over the years\, Mr. Hector has served as a guidance counselor\, clinical director\, and currently holds the role of Director of Guidance at Gesher Jewish Day School. \nIn 2013\, Mr. Hector opened a private practice in Virginia\, and in 2014 he joined Gunzburg and Associates. His clinical work focuses on adolescents\, families\, and couples. Drawing from a systemic perspective\, Mr. Hector helps families realign roles and strengthen healthy hierarchies in order to create more effective patterns of communication\, problem-solving\, and connection. \nMr. Hector is also passionate about equipping parents with practical skills and supporting families as they navigate periods of transition and growth.

SUMMARY:Day at the J: The Women Who Made Us
DESCRIPTION:Behind every one of us is a woman who showed up\, spoke up\, and refused to let us forget where we came from. This Day at the J celebrates the women who shaped us and invites us to explore what we’ve carried forward. While kids ages 7 and under enjoy an afternoon of engaging activities\, parents can choose how they want to spend their time. \nIf you’ve read Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb — a funny\, moving\, and deeply Jewish portrait of four generations of women told through the voice of a grandmother who simply refuses to be forgotten — join us for a rich group discussion about memory\, love\, loss\, and what it means to be the person someone believed in completely. The book will be provided ahead of time in your choice of paperback\, digital\, or audiobook format so you have everything you need to dive in. \nDidn’t get to the book? No problem! Spend the afternoon exploring your own family story through guided genealogy activities and family tree building. You may be surprised what you uncover — and what’s been waiting to be passed down. \nThe afternoon wraps with the whole family back together for pizza and Havdalah\, ending the week the way it should: around the table and with the people who matter.

SUMMARY:Authority in Judaism
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, join us to explore the evolution of authority in Judaism: its enduring centers\, the critiques that have shaped its contours\, and the occasions when it speaks with binding force. We will trace a journey from the absolute rule of biblical kings to the intellectual ‘republic’ of the rabbis\, examining how Jewish tradition built a system where no leader is above the law. By uncovering the Jewish voice of dissent\, from ancient prophets to Talmudic sages\, we will see how our tradition dismantled the concept of the absolute autocrat in favor of a community governed by law and debate. \nNo experience necessary. Everyone is welcome. This gathering will take place in Silver Spring\, MD. Specific meet-up location and additional details will be shared with registrants after the registration deadline. Sign up by April 30th. \nthe Den Collective serves 20s\, 30s\, and 40s throughout the Greater Washington Area.

SUMMARY:THE PROMISE AND PERIL OF CITIZENSHIP: JEWISH PATHS TO BELONGING
DESCRIPTION:4-PART SERIES: MAY 4\, 11\, 18; JUNE 1\nPresented by Geraldine Gudefin\, Historian \nWhat did it mean for Jews to become citizens of modern states—and what did citizenship demand in return? This four-lecture series explores modern Jewish history through the lens of rights\, belonging\, and political identity from the Enlightenment to the twentieth century. \nMoving from revolutionary France to the Ottoman Empire\, North Africa\, and Israel\, we will examine how Jews navigated new promises of equality while negotiating the preservation of communal and religious life. Through close engagement with primary sources we will explore competing visions of citizenship: Was emancipation a path to full inclusion\, or did it require redefining Jewish collective identity? How did imperial and colonial systems reshape the meaning of rights? And how did Jews imagine belonging across borders in an increasingly interconnected world? Jewish history reveals that citizenship is never fixed or guaranteed. It is contested\, negotiated\, and often fragile—a reality that continues to resonate in today’s debates over migration\, minority rights\, and national identity. \nRegister one time for all four sessions.
