SUMMARY:Fighting Food Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:Congregation Or Chadash (COC) has three activities for fighting food insecurity in Maryland. \n1. We have received $1\,000 microgrant from The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to purchase food for Afghani refugees. COC partners with and interfaith refugee group New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA). Afghani refugees often come with little resources. This microgrant will provide funding to buy halal meat\, milk\, fruit\, and rice for the neediest families in our community. \n2. COC will be providing a dinner for Stepping Stones Shelter. Stepping Stones is a family shelter that provides emergency shelter for up to six families at one time. \n2. We are also currently holding a canned food drive that will end on April 12th. The food we collect will go to Manna Food Center whose mission is to fight hunger in Montgomery County\, Maryland. \nFighting Food Insecurity is presented by Congregation Or Chadash in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the generous support of The Sara and Samuel J. Kehilat Shalom has been awarded funding to support providing household goods to the shelter. Help is needed to prepare meal items to the shelter and purchase specific household goods. SUMMARY:Tikvat Israel RainScape Beginnings
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we prepare the grounds for our RainScape! A RainScape is a landscape design technique that helps reduce stormwater runoff. Since we are located next to Rock Creek we want to prevent stormwater and pollution from flowing into storm drains and the nearby stream. In the fall\, we will be bringing our vision to life by planting various native plant species that will help trap the water runoff from the roof and let it soak into the ground instead of flowing into the parking lot and down the hill into the creek. But in order to be successful in the fall\, we need to prepare the ground now in the spring! We will be spreading a thin layer of compost and then a thicker layer of woodchips on top. By the time we’re ready to plant this fall\, the ground will be well prepared\, and our chances of success will be that much greater. \nCome out this Sunday (4/12) for some gardening and good cheer 🙂\nGarden rakes and equipment will be provided\, but bring your own if you feel inclined.\nThis event will start at 9am and go until 1pm. Look for us in the front parking lot next to the playground!

Participants of all ages (3 years and up) are invited to engage in a variety of service stations\, each offering a unique opportunity to give back while living our Jewish values. \nThis year\, choose from wrapping silverware for a homeless shelter\, making crepe paper flowers for senior neighbors\, assembling snack packs for local school children\, sorting kosher food donations for Yad Yehuda (our local kosher food bank)\, or crafting pet toys in a fun recycling project. \nWe are also collecting non-perishable food donations for Food for Others and Yad Yehuda in our lobby. Drop-off is welcome any time! If you would like to contribute to our snack pack station\, we especially welcome snack donations to be used on the day. \nWhether you participate in one station or all\, your efforts will create a real and lasting impact. DESCRIPTION:The JCRC of Greater Washington considers it our most sacred obligation to host the annual community-wide Yom Ha’Shoah Commemoration in memory of the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors and their family members among us. \nPlease join us Sunday\, April 12 at 1:30 PM in Fairfax\, VA for this poignant and meaningful tribute that brings together the community to reflect and strengthen our resolve at a difficult time of unprecedented antisemitism around the globe. Holocaust survivor Irene Fogel Weiss\, a Northern Virginia resident\, will be our keynote speaker. \nThe exact location will be provided to registrants closer to the event date. \nThis year\, we are pleased to offer a special teen interfaith conversation with Holocaust survivor Peter Feigl\, planned exclusively for Jewish teens AND their non-Jewish peers from around the region. This program\, which will take place from 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM at the same venue as the main commemoration\, promises to be impactful for all participants. Lunch will be provided. Kehilat Shalom has been awarded funding to support providing household goods to the shelter. Help is needed to prepare meal items to the shelter and purchase specific household goods. Items are to be brought to Kehilat Shalom between 4:30 and 5:00 pm on April 12th.

The Circle will be led by Frieda Enoch and Reb David. \nBorn in Poland to Holocaust survivors\, Frieda Enoch is well known in the Washington area as a Yiddish folk singer and performer. Frieda has served as the director of the Bender JCC’s Coming of Age adult engagement program for 20 years. She lives in North Potomac with her husband.
