SUMMARY:Fighting Food Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:Congregation Or Chadash (COC) has three activities for fighting food insecurity in Maryland. \n1. We have received $1\,000 microgrant from The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to purchase food for Afghani refugees. COC partners with and interfaith refugee group New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA). Afghani refugees often come with little resources. This microgrant will provide funding to buy halal meat\, milk\, fruit\, and rice for the neediest families in our community. \n2. COC will be providing a dinner for Stepping Stones Shelter. Stepping Stones is a family shelter that provides emergency shelter for up to six families at one time. \n2. We are also currently holding a canned food drive that will end on April 12th. The food we collect will go to Manna Food Center whose mission is to fight hunger in Montgomery County\, Maryland. \nFighting Food Insecurity is presented by Congregation Or Chadash in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the generous support of The Sara and Samuel J. Lessans Good Deeds Day Fund.

SUMMARY:New Synagogue Project Community Chevre Kaddisha Zayin Adar 5786
DESCRIPTION:Come join the NSP Community Chevre Kaddisha (NSP CCK) for our first annual Zayin Adar meeting. A chevre kaddisha is a “holy society” that carries out Jewish end-of-life and death rituals\, and Zayin Adar\, or the 7th of the Hebrew month of Adar\, is when the chevre traditionally meets. \nThis year we’ll meet a little later in Adar\, on the Gregorian date of Sunday\, March 8 from 2:00-5:00pm. We’ll discuss our plan to continue forming our chevre and how we plan to care for our community in life and death. Topics will include how we’re building a gender-expansive chevre\, and breakouts for our subgroups: education\, ritual\, bereavement care\, and shrouds. \nFood will be provided. Masks are requested when not eating or drinking. \nRSVP here: https://newsynagogueproject.org/chevre-kaddisha-zayin-adar/ \nPlease reach out to ck@newsynagogueproject.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Ancient Mesopotamia: Ziggurats\, Royal Sculpture\, and the Shaping of the Akkadian Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Ancient Mesopotamia: Ziggurats\, Royal Sculpture\, and the Shaping of the Akkadian Legacy\nMarian Feldman – Johns Hopkins University \nThe rulers of the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100-2000 BCE) built massive new ziggurat temples in southern Iraq that replaced older iterations of the sacred space; yet within these complexes\, they preserved and curated royal monuments from the preceding Akkadian dynasty (c. 2350-2150 BCE). \nAs historic architecture is a key element in shaping a culture’s memories of its past\, it aids in the formation of its national identity. Deliberate displays of representational sculpture\, however\, permit new\, interpretive narratives of the past and thereby also impacts national identity. This presentation shows the result when these two modes of identity-making intertwined with one another in the sacred precincts of the Ur III rulers: especially in the Ekur temple complex of the Sumerian god Enlil at Nippur.
