At the outset of her career as an FBI Special Agent\, she led the Department of Justice’s largest terrorism financing investigation and prosecution\, United States v. Holy Land Foundation\, et al\, which led to the conviction of some of Hamas’ top fundraisers in America. She was later hand-selected to serve as an FBI Special Assistant United States Attorney in the NDTX-Dallas office\, assigned to the National Security Section\, where she litigated a variety of federal criminal cases. She was then appointed as an FBI Supervisory Special Agent and the International Terrorism Program Coordinator for the FBI Dallas office’s counterterrorism program in 2015. DESCRIPTION:Ancient Mesopotamia: Ziggurats\, Royal Sculpture\, and the Shaping of the Akkadian Legacy\nMarian Feldman – Johns Hopkins University \nThe rulers of the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100-2000 BCE) built massive new ziggurat temples in southern Iraq that replaced older iterations of the sacred space; yet within these complexes\, they preserved and curated royal monuments from the preceding Akkadian dynasty (c. 2350-2150 BCE). \nAs historic architecture is a key element in shaping a culture’s memories of its past\, it aids in the formation of its national identity. Deliberate displays of representational sculpture\, however\, permit new\, interpretive narratives of the past and thereby also impacts national identity. This presentation shows the result when these two modes of identity-making intertwined with one another in the sacred precincts of the Ur III rulers: especially in the Ekur temple complex of the Sumerian god Enlil at Nippur.

Author and New York Times reporter Clay Risen will be in conversation with Capital Jewish Museum Executive Director\, Bea Gurwitz. \nPresented in partnership with the Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies. \nABOUT THE BOOK: Red Scare: Blacklists\, McCarthyism\, and the Making of Modern America by Clay Risen  \nFrom an award-winning historian and New York Times reporter comes the timely story about McCarthyism that both “lays out the many mechanisms of repression that made the Red Scare possible…[and] describes how something that once seemed so terrifying and interminable did\, in fact\, come to an end” (The New Yorker)—based in part on newly declassified sources. \nNow\, for the first time in a generation\, Clay Risen delivers a narrative history of the anti-Communist witch hunt that gripped America in the decade following World War II. This period\, known as the Red Scare\, was an outgrowth of the conflict between social conservatives and New Deal progressives\, and the terrifying onset of the Cold War. Marked by an unprecedented degree of political hysteria\, this was a defining moment in American history\, completely unlike any that preceded it. Drawing upon newly declassified documents and with “scenes are so vivid that you can almost feel yourself sweating along with the witnesses” (The New York Times Book Review)\, journalist Clay Risen recounts how politicians like Joseph McCarthy\, with the help of an extended network of other government officials and organizations\, systematically ruined thousands of lives in their deluded pursuit of alleged Communist conspiracies. \n“Thorough\, impassioned…detailed\, [and] tension-packed” (Los Angeles Times)\, Red Scare reveals an all-too-familiar pattern of illiberal conspiracy-mongering and political and cultural backlash that speaks directly to the antagonism and divisiveness of our contemporary moment. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS  \nBea Gurwitz is Executive Director of the Lillian & Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. Prior to joining the Museum in 2024\, she served as the deputy director of the National Humanities Alliance—an organization dedicated to bolstering the humanities on college campuses\, promoting public engagement with the humanities\, and increasing funding for humanities organizations. Additional career highlights include consulting with the National Endowment for the Humanities and the United States Department of State. She has also taught at the University of Maryland and the University of California\, Berkeley\, and in the New York City public school system. Gurwitz’s academic work focuses on the history of Jewish communities and other ethnic groups in Latin America\, and she is the author of Argentine Jews in the Age of Revolt (Brill\, 2016).  \nClay Risen is a reporter with The New York Times and the author\, most recently\, of “Red Scare: Blacklists\, McCarthyism and the Making of Modern America\,” which The Chicago Tribune named one of the ten best books of 2025. Blacklisted: An American Story explores the Hollywood blacklist and the federal government’s loyalty investigations that upended thousands of lives during the Red Scare. Through powerful personal stories\, rare artifacts\, and film clips\, the exhibition reveals how fear\, politics\, and identity collided—and what was lost when dissent was silenced. \nBlacklisted: An American Story\, on loan from Jewish Museum Milwaukee\, incorporates film\, personal narratives\, objects\, costume\, and photography to examine the shifting definition of what it meant then—and what it means now—to be a patriotic American\, and who gets to decide. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own views and experiences in a way that makes both differences and commonalities visible. \nIn this interactive session\, you will: \n\nDeepen your listening skills to elevate conversations across our community\nGain practical tools to speak with confidence across differences\nOffer feedback as we explore ways to share and utilize these skills more broadly\n\nFeaturing Dani Panitch\, Resetting the Table’s Associate Facilitator & Trainer \n \nDani is a facilitator with a passion for leadership development\, relational psychology\, and productive conflict. As an Associate Facilitator and Trainer\, Dani currently leads RTT trainings and workshops for professionals and communities nationwide. Since 2018\, Dani has played several roles at RTT\, most recently serving as the Senior Program Manager\, building the systems that support RTT’s programs. Dani has worked at a variety of non-profit organizations and schools throughout New York City\, including UJA-Federation\, MDRC\, and Quest2Learn\, providing research\, teaching and programmatic support. Dani holds a B.S. in Applied Psychology from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education\, and Human Development and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at Iona University.
