SUMMARY:Fighting Food Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:Congregation Or Chadash (COC) has three activities for fighting food insecurity in Maryland. \n1. We have received $1\,000 microgrant from The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to purchase food for Afghani refugees. COC partners with and interfaith refugee group New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA). Afghani refugees often come with little resources. This microgrant will provide funding to buy halal meat\, milk\, fruit\, and rice for the neediest families in our community. \n2. COC will be providing a dinner for Stepping Stones Shelter. Stepping Stones is a family shelter that provides emergency shelter for up to six families at one time. \n2. We are also currently holding a canned food drive that will end on April 12th. The food we collect will go to Manna Food Center whose mission is to fight hunger in Montgomery County\, Maryland. \nFighting Food Insecurity is presented by Congregation Or Chadash in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the generous support of The Sara and Samuel J. Lessans Good Deeds Day Fund.

SUMMARY:Stories of Liberation and Freedom: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The Passover story begins in Egypt and moves through plagues\, courage\, and ultimately\, the journey to freedom. Jewish tradition has been telling and retelling this story for thousands of years\, and each generation adds new layers. \nIn this learning session\, we’ll explore a range of texts – ancient and modern – that grapple with slavery\, plagues\, and the ongoing fight for liberation. Together we’ll ask: How have Jews across time understood oppression and freedom? What feels resonant or challenging for us today? \nNo experience necessary. Everyone is welcome. SUMMARY:RABBINIC PERSPECTIVES: Why Does God Hate Yeast?
DESCRIPTION:This session in our new series will explore the issues surrounding one of the central\, widely accepted values of Pesach: the prohibition against consuming foods and drinks produced through leavening. While these consumables are most often associated with bread products\, they also include items such as beer. The common element is yeast\, something humans tend to enjoy and appreciate\, but which\, in the biblical narrative\, is viewed quite differently. \nOur core text for discussion will be Exodus 12. Rashi famously identifies this chapter as the true starting point of the Torah\, suggesting that the Book of Genesis and Exodus 1–11 function\, in a sense\, as a prologue. Yet both Genesis and the opening chapters of\nExodus depict a universe radically different—two steps removed—from the worldviews of (1) classical rabbinic Judaism and (2) the modern world as we understand it. \nSo\, while one might say that God hates yeast\, the deeper question we will explore is this: What is the nature of the world that God loves\, as described in the Torah?
