SUMMARY:Echoes of Old New York: The Black-Jewish Musical Connection
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand… !\nPresented by Saul Lilienstein\nMusic Historian\, Smithsonian Affiliates in D.C.\, Johns Hopkins University\, Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center \nRagtime swept the nation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, a moment when two communities\, European Jewish immigrants seeking refuge and Black Americans searching for their own cultural sanctuary\, intersected. Instinctively\, they discovered a music that spoke powerfully to both. \nThis convergence is reflected in the story of Scott Joplin\, the Missouri-born composer who stood at the forefront of the ragtime movement. As a young musician\, Joplin studied piano with a Jewish immigrant from Germany and quickly gained early fame. When he later moved to New York\, he was embraced by African American musicians and noted Jewish influences woven into their improvisational styles. \nIn this presentation\, Saul Lilienstein will begin with an exploration of Joplin’s story\, and then discuss the other musicians who shaped this remarkable fusion\, sharing evidence of how these sounds came together to shape a uniquely American music.

SUMMARY:HerTorah: Miriam’s Song: Song as Language of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the power and impact of singing\, music-making\, composing\, and song-sharing as a spiritual practice. We are excited to learn from (and listen to!) some of the most beautiful contemporary song leaders about how melody holds memory\, accesses emotion\, and speaks a language like no other. \nChana Raskin\, founder and facilitator of RAZA\, grew up entrenched in the world of Chabad Hasidut and its stirringly complex melodies. These nigunim (melodies) have carried her at every point on her journey. Chana leads RAZA circles—meditative nigun deep dives—for diverse communities around the world. You can sample the magic of her music-making here. Read more about Chana’s song journey here. \nAs vocalist\, composer\, anthropologist\, and producer\, Galeet Dardashti has earned a reputation as a trail-blazing performer and advocate for Middle Eastern and North African Jewish culture. She is the first woman to continue her family’s tradition of distinguished Persian and Jewish musicianship. Galeet will share her familial story of singing as well as songs of freedom that speak to her Iranian heritage — particularly resonant at this moment in history. Sample Galeet’s music here and explore her family’s connection to music in the excellent podcast with her sister Danielle\, Nightingale of Iran. \nJoin us if you love making music\, listening to music\, or if you want to explore a new language of the soul. \nNo prior music experience necessary. As always\, learners of all backgrounds are most welcome. Come when you can\, stay till you can’t. But\, come. We have so much to learn from you.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary from Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Author Ross Berkoff joins us to discuss his new book Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary on the Frontlines of Afghanistan\, 2003 – 2007. \nIn 2003\, Army Cavalry Officer\, 2nd Lieutenant Ross Berkoff\, led his Scout Platoon from the 10th Mountain Division on more than 10\,000 miles of reconnaissance missions over a nine-month period across the dangerous southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand—the birthplace of the Taliban. After his transition to Military Intelligence\, Captain Berkoff returned to Afghanistan in 2006\, once again assigned to the 10th Mountain Division’s Light Cavalry. This time\, the Taliban insurgency had escalated in sophistication\, with deadly effectiveness. Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary on the Frontlines of Afghanistan\, 2003 – 2007 is the first and only raw daily chronicle from the perspective of a junior officer covering this delicate and hostile early period of the U.S. Army’s 20-year campaign against the Taliban.

SUMMARY:Book Brunch: Hyphen: Jewish Stories in Our Own Words
DESCRIPTION:What do a Laotian born refugee\, an Indian culinary creator\, a trans improv artist\, a Jewpanese podcaster\, and a Latinx storyteller have in common? They are all Jewish\, and their unique journeys are part of Hyphen\, a gorgeous comics anthology showcasing extraordinary stories of everyday people. Each story is told in the contributor’s own words and brought to life by international artists\, weaving together ancient traditions\, modern journeys\, and deeply personal experiences. \nThe Jewish people today are more diverse than ever in our history. At the heart of Hyphen is the belief that Jewish identity is not one-size-fits-all. By empowering contributors to tell their own stories\, Hyphen is a powerful celebration of what it means to be Jewish today —amplifying voices that have too often been overlooked. \nJoin us for mimosas\, bagels\, and rich conversation with the book’s creators and two featured storytellers. We’re thrilled to welcome Dubbs Weinblatt\, Eddna Samuel\, Fabrice Sapolsky and Julian Voloj in conversation with Chess Jakobs to share queer\, trans\, Indian\, Algerian\, and Colombian Jewish stories on our stage. \nThis program is brought to you by the Edlavitch DCJCC’s Capital J and GLOE program in partnership with Be’chol Lashon and Ammud: The Jews of Color Torah Academy. This event was made possible by the generosity of Jordan Bookey and Felix Lloyd\, Linda Adams\, Joshua Maxey\, and Heather Bramble\, with thanks to our promotional partners\, the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum\, Sixth & I\, and Bet Mishpachah.
