SUMMARY:Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary from Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Author Ross Berkoff joins us to discuss his new book Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary on the Frontlines of Afghanistan\, 2003 – 2007. \nIn 2003\, Army Cavalry Officer\, 2nd Lieutenant Ross Berkoff\, led his Scout Platoon from the 10th Mountain Division on more than 10\,000 miles of reconnaissance missions over a nine-month period across the dangerous southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand—the birthplace of the Taliban. After his transition to Military Intelligence\, Captain Berkoff returned to Afghanistan in 2006\, once again assigned to the 10th Mountain Division’s Light Cavalry. This time\, the Taliban insurgency had escalated in sophistication\, with deadly effectiveness. Beyond the Outpost: An Army Cavalry Officer’s War Diary on the Frontlines of Afghanistan\, 2003 – 2007 is the first and only raw daily chronicle from the perspective of a junior officer covering this delicate and hostile early period of the U.S. Army’s 20-year campaign against the Taliban.

SUMMARY:Book Brunch: Hyphen: Jewish Stories in Our Own Words
DESCRIPTION:What do a Laotian born refugee\, an Indian culinary creator\, a trans improv artist\, a Jewpanese podcaster\, and a Latinx storyteller have in common? They are all Jewish\, and their unique journeys are part of Hyphen\, a gorgeous comics anthology showcasing extraordinary stories of everyday people. Each story is told in the contributor’s own words and brought to life by international artists\, weaving together ancient traditions\, modern journeys\, and deeply personal experiences. \nThe Jewish people today are more diverse than ever in our history. At the heart of Hyphen is the belief that Jewish identity is not one-size-fits-all. By empowering contributors to tell their own stories\, Hyphen is a powerful celebration of what it means to be Jewish today —amplifying voices that have too often been overlooked. \nJoin us for mimosas\, bagels\, and rich conversation with the book’s creators and two featured storytellers. We’re thrilled to welcome Dubbs Weinblatt\, Eddna Samuel\, Fabrice Sapolsky and Julian Voloj in conversation with Chess Jakobs to share queer\, trans\, Indian\, Algerian\, and Colombian Jewish stories on our stage. \nThis program is brought to you by the Edlavitch DCJCC’s Capital J and GLOE program in partnership with Be’chol Lashon and Ammud: The Jews of Color Torah Academy. This event was made possible by the generosity of Jordan Bookey and Felix Lloyd\, Linda Adams\, Joshua Maxey\, and Heather Bramble\, with thanks to our promotional partners\, the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum\, Sixth & I\, and Bet Mishpachah.

SUMMARY:Censoring the Holocaust: How Books Shape Our View of a Painful Past
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Edna Friedberg \nEver since the 1940s\, books about the Holocaust have proven flashpoints. From early editions of The Diary of Anne Frank that omitted controversial passages to more recent attempts to ban the graphic memoir Maus from some American classrooms\, what we read about this difficult history often amplifies broader societal debates. \nJoin us to look back at Holocaust literature (both fiction and non-fiction) and how its popularity shifts depending on time\, place\, and politics.

SUMMARY:Inventing New Jewish Rituals
DESCRIPTION:Explore how Jews have historically innovated rituals and how today’s Jews are inventing new ones with Rabbi Vanessa Ochs\, PhD\, University of Virginia Professor Emeritus. No Jewish ritual was created complete—consider the Passover Seder\, the Jewish wedding ceremony\, and more! Responding to current trends and challenges\, rituals have developed over the centuries\, along a winding path of rabbinical and practitioner debate and conversation. Rabbi Ochs will be in conversation with CJM Director of Curatorial Affairs\, Dr. Sarah Leavitt. Co-Sponsored by the University of Virginia’s Jewish Studies Program. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nDr. Sarah Leavitt is the Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Capital Jewish Museum. She holds an MA in Museum Studies and a PhD in American Studies from Brown University and has worked in museums for over 30 years. Since moving to the DC area in 2000\, she has worked at the museum of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and for 13 years at the National Building Museum in DC. Her previous exhibitions have covered a range of subjects: from women’s sports\, to the history of the parking garage\, to the border wall between the US and Mexico. Sarah’s publications include several books and articles; some of her favorites cover the history of the pregnancy test\, America’s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill\, St. Elizabeths mental health hospital\, and the history of domestic advice manuals. Sarah is a member of Temple Shalom\, and lives in Silver Spring\, MD. \nRabbi Vanessa Ochs\, PhD\, University of Virginia Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies and Jewish Studies\, is the author of numerous books related to Jewish rituals\, including Inventing Jewish Ritual (Jewish Publication Society)\, winner of a National Jewish Book Award; and The Passover Haggadah: A Biography (Princeton UP). A beloved teacher\, Professor Ochs’s most popular courses at the University of Virginia were “Jewish Weddings” and “The Passover Haggadah.” A Visiting Fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, Rabbi Ochs is researching new Jewish rituals that emerged during Covid and after October 7th. \nImage credit: Promotional photo provided courtesy of the speaker.
