SUMMARY:A Women's Philanthropy Chanukah Evening of Light\, Courage\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now full. Please email Jordan Kaufman to be added to the waitlist. \n\nWomen’s Philanthropy invites you to our annual Chanukah celebration for Pomegranates and Lions of Judah in our community. We are honored to welcome Yair and Sarah Attias as our featured speakers. Their story—told from both the battlefield and the home front—offers a deeply personal window into the aftermath of October 7 and the ongoing journey of healing and rebuilding in Israel. \nThis evening will also highlight how our community is helping Israel rebuild post-war\, weaving our collective light into the fabric of recovery and hope. \n\n\n\nMeet Yair and Sarah\n\n\n\nYair Attias\, 35\, is a decorated IDF officer and father of three. He served as Battalion Commander of the Givati Brigade’s Shaked Battalion and Chief of Staff for the 162nd Armored Division during the recent war. He was among the first responders to the Nova music festival attack and led operations throughout the Gaza envelope. Today\, he serves in a joint military program with the U.S. Marine Corps in Virginia.\n\n\nSarah Attias\, 35\, is a midwife and devoted mother. She has carried the weight of wartime motherhood—raising children in uncertainty\, grieving the loss of her brother who fell in Gaza\, and holding her family together while Yair served on the front lines. \nTogether\, Yair and Sarah will share a story of service\, sacrifice\, and strength—a story that echoes the heart of Israel and the soul of our community.\n\n\n\n  \n\nChanukah reminds us of the many blessings in our lives and inspires us to bring light to others. You can help by purchasing a gift card for JCADA to support victims of power-based violence. \n\nKosher food and drinks will be provided. \nThis event is open to women who have committed to their Pomegranate ($1\,800-$4\,999) or Lion of Judah ($5\,000+) gift to the 2025 Annual Campaign. \n*The location and street address for this event will be emailed to each guest prior to the event\, using the email address provided at registration. \nWomen’s Philanthropy Leadership \nJanyse Weisz and Jessica Carbino\, Event Co-Chairs\nAbby Cherner\, Vice President\, Women’s Philanthropy\nSophie Buslik\, Assistant Vice President\, Women’s Philanthropy\nPaula Shoyer\, Ruby Lion Chair\nMarianna Ashin\, Lion of Judah Chair\nIlana Rothberg\, Pomegranate Chair\nPamela Rosenberg Gottlieb and Amy Jablin Forseter\, FRD Impact Co-Chairs \n\n*Event details\, including the location and street address or virtual link\, will be emailed to you prior to the event using the address provided at registration. SUMMARY:Pivoting with Impact: Your Next Chapter After Public Service
DESCRIPTION:After the last several months\, as rounds of federal and federal-adjacent layoffs have turned people’s lives upside down\, many in our community find themselves trying to figure out what’s next. Join the Edlavitch DCJCC and the Jewish Social Impact Network (JSI) for an evening that blends Jewish wisdom\, practical inspiration\, and career strategy. \nHear from a panel of former federal and federal-adjacent professionals who have successfully pivoted into new careers for inspiration on how to take a leap of faith into something new. Each panelist will share their story and lessons learned about aligning personal values\, professional skills\, and opportunities to do good in the world. Following the panel\, attendees will have time for small-group conversations with the speakers and their peers — a chance to share experiences\, ask questions\, and identify next steps. We will also raffle off professional headshots (to be scheduled for a later date) for 15 event participants. \nPlease note that this workshop is intended for people impacted by federal job cuts. It is open to former federal and federal-adjacent employees.\nWe understand that many are juggling childcare with job searching – feel free to bring your children to this event if needed (childcare will not be provided but they are welcome to be with you throughout the event). \nThis event is free\, but RSVP is required.

SUMMARY:Interfaith film showing "Ain't no back to a Merry-go-round"
DESCRIPTION:AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND is the untold story of the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history. When 5 Howard University students sat on a Maryland carousel in 1960\, the arrests made headlines. When the white community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing\, an extra ordinary history-making partnership was born. The pickets attracted Nazis\,Congressman\, and a press avalanche. Picketing together over the sweltering summer led to partying together\, and union organizers mentored student activists. Ten 1961 Freedom Riders\, including Stokely Carmichael\, were incubated on the Glen Echo picket line\, and the carousel arrests were challenged in the Supreme Court case. \nWith never-before seen footage\, and immersive storytelling by Emmy-award winning director Ilana Trachtman (Praying with Lior\, Black in Latin America\, The Pursuit)\, four living protesters rescue this forgotten history\, revealing the price\, and the power\, of heeding the impulse to activism. AIN’T NO BACK TO A MERRY-GO-ROUND includes voice over by noted actors Jeffrey Wright\, Mandy Patinkin\, Bob Balaban\, Lee Grant\,Peter Gallagher\, Dominique Thorne\, Alysia Reiner and Tracie Thoms. \nThe film showing will be followed by discussion with film director\, Ilana Trachtman and protestor\, Christine “Tina” Clark. \nPlease be advised that there are racial epithets and language that may not be suitable for young children.
