SUMMARY:Winter Luncheon Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Good evening\, I’m reaching out as the director of the Captain Avery museum. We were the Masonic Fishing Club in 1923\, which started when a few Jewish families bought the property. There was antisemitism and segregation of the beaches in southern Maryland at that time\, so the families purchased land so they could fish and go swimming without the stress of antisemitism. \nOn January 14th\, the Captain Avery museum has a winter lecture series about the Masonic fishing club\, which was eventually called “Our Place” by the Jewish families who spent time there. The guest speaker is Paul Foer\, who spent time at Our Place. \nJanuary 14\nSummers in the 60s\, 70s and 80s In The Old Fishing Club and Our Place: What the Museum’s Evolution (and mine as well) Teaches Us About the History of Shady Side and the Meaning of Historic Preservation \nPaul Foer\, Representative of “Our Place”\, author\, and local business entrepreneur

SUMMARY:Myths\, Legends\, and Monuments: The Popular Legacy of Early American Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LILLIAN AND ALBERT SMALL CAPITAL JEWISH MUSEUM\nPresented by Michael Hoberman\nProfessor of American Literature\, Fitchburg State University \nJoin us to explore how Jewish experiences in early America\, during the Revolution\, the era of slaveholding in the early republic and antebellum period\, and the push westward\, have been imagined\, commemorated\, and often mythologized. We’ll look at how stories about relationships between Jews and Native Americans\, as well as Jews and Black Americans\, are reinterpreted through the lens of today’s political climate. Along the way\, we will consider how the narratives Americans tell about early Jewish life shape the way we understand the racial and cultural complexities of the present. \nHoberman will examine contemporary popular portrayals of Jewish history in the United States\, from historical novels to the interpretation of early synagogues and house museums. And he’ll introduce us to present-day descendants of early American Jews who reflect on how their genealogical backgrounds inform their own identities. \nTimely and original\, this talk will help us see how the ways non-specialists interpret and represent the past play a powerful role in shaping Jewish American history and identity.

SUMMARY:WHC Challah Bake
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in nearly a decade\, the scent of fresh dough and warm community spirit will fill the halls of Washington Hebrew Congregation! All are invited for an evening that mixes tradition\, connection\, and a little bit of flour-dusted fun. SUMMARY:Navigating Grief and Finding Healing: Understanding Loss in Later Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for the first of four sessions in our Mental Health series in 2026. \nDr. Daniel Burow\, clinical director\, Sailor Health will lead this workshop to offer older adults a supportive space to explore the experience of grief and loss. \nParticipants will learn how grief may show up emotionally\, physically\, and socially\, and how it can change over time. The session will normalize grief as a natural part of life\, highlight how losses in later life (e.g.\, loved ones\, health\, independence\, identity) are often cumulative\, and provide tools for coping and reconnecting with meaning and community. Through discussion\, reflection\, and practical strategies\, participants will discover healthy ways to cope with loss and live a full life. \n1.5 CE credits for social workers \n

In 1942\, an infant was found alone in war-torn Poland—her only identifiers a name and birthdate. Raised by a loving family but haunted by unanswered questions\, Maria spent decades wondering who she truly was.

SUMMARY:D.C. - Navigating Pregnancy Loss and Infertility Through Jewish Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:Join the Den Collective Executive Director Rabbi Aderet Drucker\, At The Well Founder & CEO Sarah Waxman\, and Jewish Fertility Foundation Greater DC Program Manager Shannon Rubin for a gentle evening of listening and tender presence. In this gathering\, we will hold community around the pain\, hope\, and resilience that comes with fertility challenges and pregnancy loss. \nPregnancy loss and infertility are among the most tender\, complex experiences many people face\, yet they are often carried in silence. Judaism\, however\, does not turn away from this pain. Our tradition lifts up the stories of Hannah and Sarah\, honoring their longing\, heartbreak\, and resilience\, and reminding us that yearning\, grief\, hope\, and healing are all part of a deeply human spiritual journey. \nJoin us for an evening of compassionate community\, gentle ritual\, and Jewish wisdom as we create a brave\, sacred space for anyone navigating these experiences\, either currently or in the past. \nTogether\, we will ground ourselves\, learn from sacred stories\, reflect in small groups\, and explore Jewish healing practices\, including the mikvah\, a ritual bath for reflection and renewal\, as tools for emotional\, spiritual\, and communal support. \nLeave feeling held in deep care\, tenderness\, and belonging. \n* Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the mikvah as a healing practice and may view a mikvah\, but will not immerse during the evening. \nWho This Gathering Is For: \nThis evening is designed for anyone who has experienced pregnancy loss\, infertility\, or related challenges recently or at any point throughout their lives. We welcome people of all identities\, backgrounds\, and levels of Jewish knowledge.
