SUMMARY:Winter Luncheon Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Good evening\, I’m reaching out as the director of the Captain Avery museum. We were the Masonic Fishing Club in 1923\, which started when a few Jewish families bought the property. There was antisemitism and segregation of the beaches in southern Maryland at that time\, so the families purchased land so they could fish and go swimming without the stress of antisemitism. \nOn January 14th\, the Captain Avery museum has a winter lecture series about the Masonic fishing club\, which was eventually called “Our Place” by the Jewish families who spent time there. The guest speaker is Paul Foer\, who spent time at Our Place. \nJanuary 14\nSummers in the 60s\, 70s and 80s In The Old Fishing Club and Our Place: What the Museum’s Evolution (and mine as well) Teaches Us About the History of Shady Side and the Meaning of Historic Preservation \nPaul Foer\, Representative of “Our Place”\, author\, and local business entrepreneur

SUMMARY:Myths\, Legends\, and Monuments: The Popular Legacy of Early American Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LILLIAN AND ALBERT SMALL CAPITAL JEWISH MUSEUM\nPresented by Michael Hoberman\nProfessor of American Literature\, Fitchburg State University \nJoin us to explore how Jewish experiences in early America\, during the Revolution\, the era of slaveholding in the early republic and antebellum period\, and the push westward\, have been imagined\, commemorated\, and often mythologized. We’ll look at how stories about relationships between Jews and Native Americans\, as well as Jews and Black Americans\, are reinterpreted through the lens of today’s political climate. Along the way\, we will consider how the narratives Americans tell about early Jewish life shape the way we understand the racial and cultural complexities of the present. \nHoberman will examine contemporary popular portrayals of Jewish history in the United States\, from historical novels to the interpretation of early synagogues and house museums. And he’ll introduce us to present-day descendants of early American Jews who reflect on how their genealogical backgrounds inform their own identities. \nTimely and original\, this talk will help us see how the ways non-specialists interpret and represent the past play a powerful role in shaping Jewish American history and identity.

SUMMARY:Navigating Grief and Finding Healing: Understanding Loss in Later Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for the first of four sessions in our Mental Health series in 2026. \nDr. Daniel Burow\, clinical director\, Sailor Health will lead this workshop to offer older adults a supportive space to explore the experience of grief and loss. \nParticipants will learn how grief may show up emotionally\, physically\, and socially\, and how it can change over time. The session will normalize grief as a natural part of life\, highlight how losses in later life (e.g.\, loved ones\, health\, independence\, identity) are often cumulative\, and provide tools for coping and reconnecting with meaning and community. Through discussion\, reflection\, and practical strategies\, participants will discover healthy ways to cope with loss and live a full life. \n1.5 CE credits for social workers \n
