SUMMARY:Legal Clinic to Support Federal Employees
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of federal workers in our region\, including many in our local Jewish community\, have been fired — or fear they may be fired — and need legal assistance to protect their employment rights. The JCRC of Greater Washington is pleased to be working with Rise Up Federal Workers Legal Defense Network to cosponsor a virtual legal clinic to provide assistance for these individuals at no cost. \nWe are seeking volunteer attorneys to staff this virtual clinic\, which will be held on Thursday\, November 13 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. \nRetired attorneys can participate if they have an active DC bar license. No experience in employment law is necessary. \nVolunteers must fill out a brief profile and complete one 90-minute online training module prior to the clinic date (excluding those who practice federal labor law) at https://workerslegaldefense.org/. \nRise Up will provide onsite support from employment law experts during the clinic itself. Volunteer lawyers who conduct consultations through Rise Up are covered by its malpractice insurance policy. \nYou may sign up for Rise Up and watch the training video before or after registering for the November 13 clinic below.

SUMMARY:JxJ Best of Fest film screening – “Blind at Heart”
DESCRIPTION:The Pozez JCC\, in partnership with Edlavitch DCJCC\, presents JxJ BEST OF FEST: Monthly Film Screenings at Cinema Arts Theatre in Fairfax. \n“Blind at Heart”\nDir. Barbara Albert | 2024 | Germany/Switzerland | 136 min. \nA magnetic Mala Emde portrays Hélène\, an aspiring doctor who tries to hide her Jewish identity after arriving in Weimar-era Berlin as a young woman. Over the subsequent decades\, Hélène finds her career ambitions and romantic expectations transformed as she begins to witness the frightening rise of Nazism\, ultimately leading her to drastic decisions that will forever change her sense of self and make her question the very idea of personal independence. With an assured sense of dramatic motion\, Barbara Albert adapts Julia Franck’s internationally renowned\, German Book Prize-winning novel\, “Die Mittagsfrau (The Blindness of the Heart)\,” into an exacting moral tale about the difficult choices people make during times of tumult\, spanning the late 1920s to the darkest days of World War II. \nNote: some images may be disturbing; contains a depiction of sexual assault.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Brivele & A Glezele Tey - Klezmer music and Yiddish Folk Songs
DESCRIPTION:Brivele (Yiddish for “little letter” )\, a Seattle-based ensemble who braid together Yiddish song\, anti-fascist and labor balladry\, folk-punk\, and contemporary rabble-rousing in stirring vocal harmony. Like letters\, songs travel — through time and over borders. They pick up dirt\, aromas\, fingerprints. They are sent to lovers\, they foment revolution\, they get stolen and censored\, burned and salvaged\, sewn into our clothes. We journey into the archives of Yiddish anti-fascist musical tradition\, bringing together anti-authoritarian satire\, mournful remembrances\, and the disguised political commentary in folk ditties and theater classics. These songs are a correspondence: our ancestors’ voices speak clearly and uncompromisingly\, sometimes sweetly\, to our present moment. \nA Glezele Tey (Yiddish for “a little glass of tea”)\, a group comprised of acclaimed klezmer musicians and composers Ariel Shapiro\, Rachel Leader\, and Richie Barshay. Come for an intimate concert of klezmer\, Yiddish folk songs\, and tkhines—traditional Ashkenazi prayers centering women\, trans\, and gender non-conforming voices\, set to new melodies. Drawing from archival recordings and contemporary life in the Eastern European Jewish diaspora\, A Glezele Tey’s music is grounded in community\, ritual\, and care—lifting collective voices to move through grief\, inspire action\, and imagine a frayer velt (a freer world).

SUMMARY:An Evening with Brivele & A Glezele Tey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening of klezmer\, Yiddish folk song\, folk-punk\, and tkhines—where tradition meets resistance\, and music carries the spirit of care\, courage\, and collective liberation. \nBrivele (Yiddish for “little letter”) is a Seattle-based ensemble who braid together Yiddish song\, anti-fascist and labor balladry\, folk-punk\, and contemporary rabble-rousing in stirring vocal harmony. Like letters that travel through time and across borders\, their songs pick up traces of history—dirt\, aromas\, fingerprints. They have been sent to lovers\, have fomented revolution\, have been censored\, burned\, and salvaged. Brivele delves into the archives of Yiddish anti-fascist musical tradition\, bringing to life anti-authoritarian satire\, mournful remembrance\, and hidden political commentary in folk ditties and theater classics. Their music is a correspondence across generations—our ancestors’ voices speaking clearly and defiantly to the present moment. \nA Glezele Tey (Yiddish for “a little glass of tea”) is an ensemble featuring acclaimed klezmer musicians and composers Ariel Shapiro\, Rachel Leader\, and Richie Barshay. They offer an intimate concert of klezmer\, Yiddish folk songs\, and tkhines—traditional Ashkenazi prayers centering women\, trans\, and gender-nonconforming voices—set to newly composed melodies. Drawing from archival recordings and contemporary diasporic life\, A Glezele Tey’s music is grounded in community\, ritual\, and care\, lifting collective voices to move through grief\, inspire action\, and imagine a frayer velt (a freer world). \nCome be part of an evening of song and spirit that honors the past\, celebrates resilience\, and envisions liberation through the power of Yiddish music.

SUMMARY:HerTorah: All In The Family
DESCRIPTION:There is nothing better… or messier\, or more loving\, or more painful\, or more supportive… than family. \nCome hang out with SVIVAH as we explore some of our foundational biblical conceptions of family\, and how these core relationships impact our own lives and communities. \nHave you ever noticed that the first families we hear of in the Book of Genesis… are an absolute mess??? \nThere is sibling rivalry\, brutal jealousy\, parental favoritism\, estrangement\, deception\, grudge-holding… and so much more. You name it\, and it’s there. \nThese foundational family stories of our ancestors can’t be coincidental. Not a single one of them tell a story of a “picture-perfect family” and yet — these are the family stories that are the bedrock of the Jewish people. \nWhat can we learn from our biblical family tree? \nAnd what lessons can we apply to our own families? How can we navigate different personalities and complicated relationships and lean into good conversations and opportunities for connection? \nCome hang out with us. SVIVAH would love to spend some Thanksgiving-themed time together with you. We’ll laugh a little\, learn a lot\, and come away feeling better all around.
