SUMMARY:Seeing Color in Classical Art
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Color in Classical Art \nJennifer Stager – Johns Hopkins University \nAncient Mediterranean art and architecture that have survived over the centuries present the modern viewer with images of white. Recent research and scholarship have overturned this visual aspect. \nThere is now a consensus that sculpture and similar artifacts produced in the ancient Mediterranean world\, were\, in fact\, multi-colored. Dr. Stager will examine the traces of color in a variety of media and recreate what the ancients would have witnessed.

SUMMARY:Baron de Hirsch\, the Godfather of Jewish Settlers in the New World
DESCRIPTION:Step into the remarkable story of how the Bronfman and Grossinger families\, along with hundreds of thousands of other Jewish immigrants\, got their start thanks to the billions of dollars Baron Maurice de Hirsch dedicated to giving “a portion of my companions in faith the possibility of finding a new existence.” \nFrom the pampas of Argentina to the rolling hills of southern Brazil\, across the United States\, and onto the windblown prairies of Canada\, his generosity opened doors and transformed countless lives. \nHis philanthropy founded the New World’s second largest Jewish community in Argentina\, sparked multibillion dollar fortunes in Brazil\, introduced the first bathroom showers and the first farmers’ credit unions to the United States\, helped Saskatchewan and Alberta avoid annexation by the United States\, and played a key role in the development of the Jewish Catskills. \nJoin us to learn how maybe even your family benefitted from Baron de Hirsch’s generosity.

SUMMARY:Aziz Abu Sarah and Maoz Inon with Rabbi Aaron Potek
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian Aziz Abu Sarah and Israeli Maoz Inon forged a bond when the world expected them to be enemies. Aziz\, a Palestinian\, lost his brother after he was arrested and tortured by the IDF. Maoz\, an Israeli\, lost both of his parents to Hamas militants on October 7. In the wake of tragedy\, the lifelong peace activists chose to fight for peace because everything other than peace has failed. \nIn The Future Is Peace: A Shared Journey Across the Holy Land\, Sarah and Inon walk the physical and emotional landscapes of their intertwined histories – from the ruins of Gaza’s border communities to Jerusalem’s winding stone alleyways\, from the hills of Galilee to Bethlehem’s concrete separation barrier. Facing competing narratives\, they explore how compassion and unity can pull humanity back from the precipice of blind hatred. \nThe Future Is Peace challenges the belief that more violence can ever bring security. Their story is proof of the possibility for reconciliation to heal the wounds of revenge and for partnerships to change a destiny of war. Sarah and Inon are Co-CEOs of InterAct International\, a nonprofit dedicated to Middle East Peace. They’ll be in conversation with Sixth & I’s Senior Rabbi\, Aaron Potek. \nA book signing will follow the event for those who would like their name added to their book.

SUMMARY:Silence and Survival: Modern Midrash and Post‑Holocaust Jewish Thought
DESCRIPTION:RABBINIC PERSPECTIVES: CONVERSATIONS FOR OUR TIMES\nPresented by Rabbi Jack Luxemburg\nRabbi Emeritus\, Temple Beth Ami\, Rockville\, MD \nEighty years after the Shoah\, and still we are struggling to find ways to talk about the horror\, the tragedy and the destruction visited upon our people and the world. \nDuring the season of Holocaust Remembrance\, Rabbi Jack Luxemburg\, offers the study and discussion of two modern voices\, both women\, who employ the ancient mode of Midrash\, to illustrate differing responses to the challenging questions — moral\, social and spiritual — posed by the Shoah. These passages are selected from the collection titled\, “Dirshuni: Contemporary Women’s Midrash”. \nThe session will provide our community of learners with an opportunity explore aspects of post-Holocaust thought\, and to recall both victims and survivors through the traditional practice of study in memory of those whom we have lost.
