SUMMARY:The Anne F. and Julius Schlezinger Law Lecture with Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Havdalah at 7:00 pm\, followed by light refreshments. At 7:30 pm\, we will welcome Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat for our annual Schlezinger Law Lecture. Ambassador Eizenstat will discuss his new book\, The Art of Diplomacy: How American Negotiators Reached Historic Agreements that Changed the World\, and America’s most significant and consequential negotiations over the past fifty years. \nAmbassador Eizenstat is a former top White House aide\, U.S. ambassador\, undersecretary of state\, and deputy secretary of the treasury who has served in six presidential administrations\, played a leading role himself in several of these negotiations\, and personally interviewed more than 125 U.S. and international leaders. He has a 360-degree view of international negotiations at the highest level. Eizenstat brings to life the personalities\, issues\, obstacles\, and dramatic breakthroughs that have created the world we live in today. He shows how the United States has been the indispensable leader: sometimes as a direct negotiator seeking a desired outcome; sometimes as a mediator between contesting parties; sometimes wielding military force to achieve a political goal; and sometimes as an advocate for global cooperation on issues like international trade and climate change. \nRegistration encouraged\, but not required.

SUMMARY:Listening and Building Allies with People We Strongly Disagree With
DESCRIPTION:There is so much divisiveness in the current period. Many people only talk to or interact with the people who already agree with them. This makes it extremely difficult to learn new ideas\, have challenging conversations\, or be positively impacted by other people’s thinking. \nIn this workshop\, we will demonstrate tools for listening to people we disagree with and identifying why it’s so hard for us to listen to certain people or ideas. We will have a chance to identify and learn practices for healing the emotions that can get in the way of our listening. We will learn specific skills for drawing people out when we disagree with them\, and then\, deciding when and how to offer our own best thinking.\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nCherie Brown is the founder and CEO of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI). For 41 years\, NCBI has been a national leader in offering training programs to K- 12 schools and college campuses on bridge building\, coalition building skills. For the past several years\, Cherie has offered this workshop at the U.N. in NYC during climate week.

SUMMARY:Bridges Beyond Borders: Peace Builders on the Ground
DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop & conversation with alumni of the Arava Institute \nJoin us for a unique encounter with the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies – a space where young Israelis\, Palestinians\, Jordanians\, and international students come together to learn\, live\, and build a shared future. \nThrough education\, research\, and daily life in the community\, the Arava Institute empowers students to develop the skills\, friendships\, and understanding needed to lead the region toward a more sustainable and peaceful future. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll meet Arielle Ben-Hur and Jawdat Kassab\, two Arava alumni – an Israeli and a Palestinian – who will share their personal journeys of building trust\, partnership\, and hope\, and their choice to join the Institute despite the complex reality that surrounds them. \nTogether\, we’ll move into small discussion groups to reflect\, ask questions\, and explore both the challenges and the possibilities that arise when people dare to connect beyond borders. \nWe’ll close with shared insights and inspiration – taking with us new perspectives on what peace-building can look like\, here and now.

SUMMARY:Legal Clinic to Support Federal Employees
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of federal workers in our region\, including many in our local Jewish community\, have been fired — or fear they may be fired — and need legal assistance to protect their employment rights. The JCRC of Greater Washington is pleased to be working with Rise Up Federal Workers Legal Defense Network to cosponsor a virtual legal clinic to provide assistance for these individuals at no cost. \nWe are seeking volunteer attorneys to staff this virtual clinic\, which will be held on Thursday\, November 13 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. \nRetired attorneys can participate if they have an active DC bar license. No experience in employment law is necessary. \nVolunteers must fill out a brief profile and complete one 90-minute online training module prior to the clinic date (excluding those who practice federal labor law) at https://workerslegaldefense.org/. \nRise Up will provide onsite support from employment law experts during the clinic itself. Volunteer lawyers who conduct consultations through Rise Up are covered by its malpractice insurance policy. \nYou may sign up for Rise Up and watch the training video before or after registering for the November 13 clinic below.
