Stephen Weiss was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is married to his wife of 38+ years, Jill. He have two sons, Zachary who is 31 years old, and Jonah who is 21 years old. He attended Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh for 12 years before attending Yeshiva University in New York City, and graduating from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.

After 26+ years, Weiss retired in June of 2020 from teaching middle school science in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Additionally, he has been involved with the Tree of Life Congregation for more than 31 years. He served as Ritual Director, Youth Director, B’nai Mitzvah instructor, Torah reader, teacher, principal, and when necessary, filled in for the Rabbi and Cantor.

Weiss was in the Tree of Life building on October 27, 2018 and survived the mass shooting that occurred there. He received ALICE training at both the Tree of Life Religious School and in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Weiss believe it was this training that enabled me to survive the shooting. He has taken on the mission of promoting active shooter training for everyone to help provide the skills that can provide the same chance of survival that he had.
