As Humanistic Jews, we have a wish for our children to understand and respect the values and traditions of their forebears without feeling compelled to agree with all the beliefs and practices of past generations. We want our children to develop their own convictions on the basis of knowledge, ethical values, and compassion for others. And furthermore, we teach the responsibility of tikkun olam, working to improve their world.
We named our Sunday school Jewish Cultural School because we focus on values, Jewish identity, the history of the Jewish people, and of course Jewish culture.
We meet at the Jewish Primary Day School, 6045 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20011.
Each Sunday that the Jewish Cultural School meets, there’s music for all from 9:45 -10:15 am. Not only is there singing, but the lively Machar Band, made up of children, teens, and adults, accompanies. Afterwards, the children go to their classes and adults may attend Machar’s Adult Education program. At 12:15 pm everyone meets for a nosh (snack) and a schmooze (conversation).
