Tikvat Israel RainScape Beginnings

Tikvat Israel RainScape Beginnings
Join us as we prepare the grounds for our RainScape! A RainScape is a landscape design technique that helps reduce stormwater runoff. Since we are located next to Rock Creek we want to prevent stormwater and pollution from flowing into storm drains and the nearby stream. In the fall, we will be bringing our vision to life by planting various native plant species that will help trap the water runoff from the roof and let it soak into the ground instead of flowing into the parking lot and down the hill into the creek. But in order to be successful in the fall, we need to prepare the ground now in the spring! We will be spreading a thin layer of compost and then a thicker layer of woodchips on top. By the time we're ready to plant this fall, the ground will be well prepared, and our chances of success will be that much greater. Come out this Sunday (4/12) for some gardening and good cheer :) Garden rakes and equipment will be provided, but bring your own if you feel inclined. This event will start at 9am and go until 1pm. Look for us in the front parking lot next to the playground!

Good Deeds Day at Oseh Shalom

Good Deeds Day at Oseh Shalom
After our Tikkun Olam (Repair the World) Assembly, children, teens, and adult helpers will make Earth balls filled with native plant seeds to increase bird, bee and butterfly populations. Children will also create puddlers to help sustain butterfly populations while learning more about these important topics. We will work with Blankets of Hope to provide free blankets and cards for our local homeless shelter residents. Each activity will include a learning component. Community members (age 3 and up) welcome. RSVPs encouraged to oseheddirector@gmail.com.

Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School October 7 Commemorations

Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School October 7 Commemorations
CESJDS will observe the commemoration of October 7 on Thursday, October 9 in school. At CESJDS, our approach is to mark this day with solemn testimony, special prayers, remembrance of those who lost their lives, and with a renewed commitment to fostering the next generation of proud Jews. As with all commemorations at our school, our programming will be developmentally appropriate across divisions: Lower School – We will offer special words of solidarity with the people and state of Israel before our daily singing of Hatikvah/The Hope (Israel’s national anthem) and include prayers for Israel and the hostages in our daily prayer services. Middle School – Students will welcome Col. Karni Guez, a former IDF tank commander who served for six and a half years. She will share her story of bravery and leadership, the decisions she had to make, the responsibility she carried, and her reflections on the war. High School – Students will participate in a special assembly with award-winning Israeli journalist Lee Yaron, author of 10/7: 100 Human Stories, which was named the 2024 National Jewish Book Award Book of the Year, making her the youngest author ever to receive that honor. She will speak about her book and her experience as an investigative journalist in Israel. Upper School – Special prayers will be added to Z’man Kodesh in both Middle and High School.
