D'var
Torah

Good afternoon,

Gilad Shalit is finally home, after 5 excruciatingly lonely years as a prisoner. We hope that in his heart he knew that he was never truly alone nor forgotten by his family, the IDF, Israel and the worldwide Jewish community. This week, we witnessed the quintessential Jewish expression of the sanctity of each life. The joy of our holiday celebrations are magnified by the joy of Gilad’s release, though tempered by the painful choices and sacrifices required to secure his release.

Tomorrow, we celebrate Shemini Atzeret, the final day of Sukkot, followed by Simchat Torah, during which we will complete the reading of the Torah and begin all over again. The Torah reading for Shemini Atzeret comes from Deuteronomy, and reminds us during this festival of harvest bounty, “If, however, there is a needy person among you…do not harden your heart and shut your hand against your needy kinsman. Rather, you must open your hand and lend him sufficient for whatever he needs.”

In the midst of joy, we are reminded that there are those who have none. In the midst of plenty, there are those without. The theme of holding off on full celebration until we have provided for the needy is repeated over and over in Jewish tradition, including delivering baskets of food and giving tzedakah on Purim and inviting the stranger to the Sukkah, the Pesach and Shabbat tables.

The final Hebrew letter of the Torah is the “lamed”; the first is “bet”.  Together, they spell “lev”, or heart, which rejoices at the blessings of health, family, community and Torah. Let’s commit to a year of hearts that are not hardened to those who need us.

Building Joy
When you think of fall, you think of children jumping in piles of leaves, apple cider and carving pumpkins. But thanks to Congregation Beth El’s Build the Joy program, the fall season is taking on a whole new meaning for its students. Now in its 13th year, Build the Joy was developed as a way to engage children in the traditions and meaning of the Sukkot holiday. Last weekend, over 350 students and their families joined together to make paper chains, design stained glass ushpizin windows, read stories and sing songs while helping build and decorate sukkot at their classmates' homes. For more information, please contact Elisha Frumkin.

Chunky Monkey. Chubby Hubby. The Network.
What do these three things have in common? Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, will be joining The Federation on November 16 for the must-attend networking event of the year for business professionals. The Network Event is designed to take your networking to the next level, with business leaders from some of the largest companies in the area attending! And the Cherry (Garcia) on top? Jerry will be discussing his unique business philosophy, which can easily transfer to your life and career.
